Leadership and Development

Leadership Development is the foundation of the AAMHA mission. The organization's 15-member "working" board is comprised of community, governmental and business representatives, and resident majority who come primarily from the AAMHA properties and their surrounding neighborhoods. In order to prepare for board service residents are encouraged to attend AAMHA's Community Leadership Training.
The Community Leaders Training Program encourages residents to participate in their communities and the larger organization. Residents attend three one-day training sessions during a six-month timeframe; the sessions focus on organizational development, finances, asset management, and conflict resolution.
Completion of the program prepares residents for the opportunity to serve on AAMHA’s overall board to help provide governance for the entire organization. The majority of the AAMHA board positions are held by residents of AAMHA communities and surrounding neighborhoods. Residents and board members have the opportunity to also receive national training through NeighborWorks America® Training Institutes.
At AAMHA, leadership development begins with the youth of each community who participate in their own Youth Councils. These unique Youth Councils plan community field trips, on-site activities and community improvement projects—factoring in funds that have been budgeted or raised through planned activities. Opportunities for educational advancement are available to all residents at any time and include structured computer technology courses, self-paced GED and ESL, as well as Health and Wellness workshops.
