AAMHA has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally for the quality, consistency and effectiveness of its resident programs. Services offered year-round at AAMHA’s Learning Centers at its multi-family apartment communities include:

Leadership Development
The Community Leaders Training Program encourages residents to participate in their communities and the larger organization. Residents attend three one-day training sessions during a six-month timeframe; the sessions focus on organizational development, finances, asset management, and conflict resolution.

Completion of the program prepares residents for the opportunity to serve on Alamo’s or AAMHA’s overall board to help provide governance for the entire organization. The majority of the AAMHA or Alamo board positions are held by residents of AAMHA communities and surrounding neighborhoods. Residents and board members have the opportunity to also receive national training through NeighborWorks America® Training Institutes.

At AAMHA, leadership development begins with the youth of each community who participate in their own Youth Councils. These unique Youth Councils plan community field trips, on-site activities and community improvement projects—factoring in funds that have been budgeted or raised through planned activities.

Opportunities for educational advancement are available to all residents at any time and include structured computer technology courses, self-paced GED and ESL, as well as Health and Wellness workshops.

Economic Literacy
Alamo Area Mutual Housing Association understands that assets build community and AAMHA’s greatest assets are its residents. It is because of this that AAMHA partners with outside organizations to provide residents with financial literacy opportunities including consumer credit counseling, money management and first time homebuyer trainings. Each year, AAMHA also provides residents with onsite tax-preparation workshops, along with the option to electronically file Income Tax returns.

Youth Cultural Development
The Pathways Youth Program provides interactive educational enrichment activities at the Learning Center of each AAMHA community. The structured programs emphasize art, music and literacy in an environment of cooperative learning. During the school-year, the program is offered Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for children over the age of six. During the summer when school is out, the hours are extended.

Beyond daily enrichment activities, children have the opportunity to complete homework and play educational computer games that reinforce math, science, reading and creative thinking.

In an effort to supplement the in-house Pathways Youth Program, AAMHA has partnered with outside organizations to provide programs like Girl Scouts, Junior Achievement, Music Camp and 4H Outreach onsite at each AAMHA Learning Center.

Toddler Time is another component of Pathways and is offered various times throughout the week. During this particular program, parents with children under the age of five are encouraged to participate in educational enrichment activities that focus on school readiness, daily responsibilities and introduction to shapes and numbers.

Community Wellness
To strengthen its communities, AAMHA encourages residents to come together in order to participate in shared activities, interact and build a support network. Resident Coordinators schedule Community Wellness activities at various times throughout the month. The activities can be as simple as bingo, as informal as potluck, or more structured with arts and crafts, community gardens or field trips. The focus is to bring neighbors into a constructive relationship with each other. In this way AAMHA promotes the notion of community and supports neighbors’ reliance upon each other to accomplish common goals.

AAMHA provides additional opportunities for residents of its communities including:

Long Term Residents Appreciation
Residents who have lived in any one of AAMHA’s communities for five years become a Long Term Resident. These individuals are recognized and honored with the return of their initial move-in deposit, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation. Long term residents are also provided with their very own Courtesy parking space.

Education Grants
Residents who have been living in an AAMHA community for at least 12 months and who are in a post secondary education program are eligible to apply for the AAMHA Education Grant. If awarded, this unique grant will support the awardee’s continuing education financially—with the intention of helping them meet their future goals more quickly. The AAMHA Education Grant is offered two times each year.
